I’ve had an account on Goodhood for a while but was hesitant to release anything but here goes nothing. This is my rap debut, quite a daunting experience uploading it online given I’ve really only made beats for the past 4 years. I have made a few other songs where I’ve written a verse and recorded a vocal but this is the first one I can tolerate and am happy to put online. I recorded the vocal in my bedroom so I think the main areas I’m asking for advice on are how to properly mix and record a rap vocal. Any other feedback on the instrumental would be greatly appreciated. The entire track is self-produced so I really appreciate any feedback on any part of the track. Also aware that it’s only one verse, could it use a second or maybe a chorus? or is it fine as is?
Currently, I’m working my way towards getting a handful of songs that I like of my own onto streaming services but the more i work towards that the more I realize I can’t do everything on my own. Would love to get into contact with some other producers more skilled than myself to work with or atleast bounce some ideas off. 🙂
Sick beat, great rhythm in your rhymes and great lyrics. I would just like to hear more "on the table". Like lean into the feeling and give it some energy. Whatever that energy is. I can feel the edges of it but I think there’s a lot more room there that you can explode into. Not necessarily volume (although it could be)…more vulnerability/attitude/emotion. Let us in more. I feel like I want more of what these rhymes mean through your performance of them.
One interesting exercise is to re-sing/rap the whole thing again at full volume. Almost yelling it the whole way through. Maximum energy, over the top, just ridiculous energy. Just to see where the top is. Then scale it back a few levels and do it again. Keep doing it until you find the level of energy that feels interesting. Sometimes hard to find a place to do it but I always find a car ride is good for some high-energy lyric testing.
As for feedback for the track, I think it’s great. I think don’t get too caught up in what it needs at this point. Just keep creating. Follow what feels right for you. When faced with a decision whether to create more or not, usually pick the create more option… if you don’t like it, just delete it. When you create more, at least you have the choice. It also lets you explore different avenues rather than just imagining what they could be.
Work with some ppl and other singers and that sometimes helps inform decisions about structure. Just follow your gut, it won’t let you down.
Congrats on the first upload, the hardest part is over. Now just keep going 😀

Some basic ways you could experiment with is by duplicating the Vox track and cutting the highs on one and lows on the other, and even a 3rd for the mid range, and then apply some “rooming” effect to the highs ever so lightly, while surgically going to town on where the muddiness is after scanning with the analyzer tool to get a proper read of the frequency.
Otherwise, I think def experiment with how you’d like to process your vocals, as this is a whole area to harness besides the beats, a super dope adventure to embark on!
